DC Microgrid Building Energy Management Platform for Improved Energy Efficiency, Energy Security, and Operating Costs

Abstract

In this project, a building-scale DC microgrid was installed containing rooftop solar PV, commercial high-bay lighting, industrial ceiling fans, and battery energy storage. By avoiding conversions from DC to AC in the sources which create the electrical energy (solar) as well as from AC back to DC in the electrical load devices which utilize the energy (lights and fans), the objective of the project was to demonstrate improvements in efficiency, reliability, resiliency, and cost.
