Cultural Kesselschlacht: Deep Battle in the Cognitive Dimension

Abstract

The 2018 National Security Strategy's call to return to realism and the US Army's reorientation towards large scale combat operations against near-peer adversaries drives a requirement to change how the United States will compete in the information environment. By changing its approach to conducting MISO, the United States can achieve relative advantage in the information environment vis-a-vis its strategic competitors. Over time, by using narrative tools such as framing, reinterpretation, and altercasting, the United States can reduce the legitimacy of a competitor state's dominant social group and its ability to organize its power resources and project power during a transition from competition to violent conflict.
