Operation Fill the Bucket
Abstract
My career in Recruiting began in October of 1992 and encompassed almost my entire career in the U.S. Navy. I served from June 26, 1988 thru August 19, 1999. My positions ranged from electronic surveillance to recruiting duty 1992 -1999. I enlisted into the Virginia Army National Guard full time force on 20 August, 1999. It was straight into the Recruiting and Retention Detachment in Chesterfield Virginia. I had previous experience, but was classified as a basic RRNCO (Recruiting and Retention NCO). This was basically the same beast I dealt with in Navy recruiting. Many phone calls per day, school visits, driving routes in a government vehicle. However, 9/11 happened and I was in a staff meeting with the 276th ENG HQRS and going over support from the unit for recruiting events when the 1st plane hit tower number 1. Everyone thought this was a fluke and just merely an accident. We had SFC Chip Lankert another RRNCO giving us details as they came in to the Armory. He was rather excited as this was big news in Richmond Virginia. We very seldom had anything other than a natural disaster to cover and this was big news. Very big news when the 2nd plane hit tower number 2.
