Ethical Decision-Making When Facing Public Scrutiny

Abstract

When dealing with the issue of ethical decision-making, the fear of public scrutiny can often lead to the downfall of many organizations and individuals. Information can be sent around the world today with the push of a button. World events now have a multitude of avenues in which to reach the public. 24-hour news channels and high speed Internet are the two main sources in which the world now receives information. World and breaking news events are often broadcasted in real time as it happens. Organizations will sometimes be unaware that an issue concerning them has made the news channels even before they have heard of it themselves, or even had time to react it the event. This pressure has place a great burden on the ethical decision-making process in every organization and has lead to two basic paths when faced with ethical dilemmas; (1) do we face the public scrutiny of our decision, or (2) do we avoid the issue and cover it up?
