The Role of the Background Solar Wind on SEP Events

Abstract

During the final reporting period of the research project, the PI and project collaborators developedand tested their methodology towards modeling the transport of solar energetic particles (SEPs)from within the solar corona (< 30 solar radii) to 1 AU in the inner heliosphere. The methodologyinvolves coupling the modeled magnetic fields lines produced from the Wang-Sheeley-Arge solarcorona model (WSA; Arge et al., 2003) together with those from the Enlil heliospheric solar windmodel (Odstrcil, 2003) and using the SEPMOD code (Luhmann et al., 2007; 2010) to model thetransport of SEP protons along those coupled field lines. The task of connecting the WSA fieldlines to those with Enlil has been non-trivial since the magnetic field line tracing information fromWSA (e.g., the position and magnitude of the field line tracing at each step, from 21.5 R downto the solar photosphere at 1 R) is not routinely provided as input into Enlil.
