US Central Command Campaign Planning against the Soviet Union, 1979-1987

Abstract

In the aftermath of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the United States became concerned about the potential threat of Iran's seizure by the Soviet Union. The first planning efforts by US Central Command during the 1980s were to formulate ways to thwart the Soviet invasion of Iran. This briefing on that planning was presented to the combatant commander of US Central Command and his staff in September 2020.
