Odontocete Studies on the Pacific Missile Range Facility in February 2020: Satellite-Tagging, Photo-Identification, and Passive Acoustic Monitoring

Abstract

The U.S. Navy regularly undertakes training and testing activities on or around the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) between Kauai and Niihau. Vessel-based field studies of odontocetes first began off Kauai and Niihau in 2003 (Baird et al. 2003) as part of a long-term,multi-species assessment of odontocetes in the main Hawaiian Islands (Baird et al. 2013a; Baird 2016) being undertaken by Cascadia Research Collective (CRC). As with the other main Hawaiian Islands, the proximity of deep water close to shore provides habitat for a number ofodontocete species off Kauai. However, the small size of the island and its orientation relative to prevailing trade winds result in a small area that is typically calm enough to detect and work with most species. Thus, considerable survey effort has been needed to learn about all but themost frequently encountered species of odontocetes off the island.
