Ship Camouflage - Reduction of Visibility of Periscope Feather with Dye
Abstract
Experiments with an imitation periscope pushed in front of a motor boat showed: (a) that showering a water solution of black dye down on to the top of the "feather" produced an effective darkening of the "feather" and (b) that introducing the dye solution into the water below the surface was less effective. With the dye solution ejected from a small ring nozzle attached to the periscope tube a few inches above the feather, 6 gallons of dye solution per minute were required when the periscope speed was 7 knots. It is calculated that for a destroyer moving at 24 knots, roughly 1000 gallons of dye solution per minute would be required to darken the wake.
