Test of U.S. Coast Guard Type CGR-31 Intermediate Frequency Receiver
Abstract
The Type CGR-31 receiving equipment is in its present form unsuitable for satisfactory operation in the Naval Service. In the important features in mechanical construction, when viewed in the light of present day knowledge of Navy receiver design, the receiver is without merit. The design of the ganged variable tuning condenser is poor, for the separate tuning condensers are housed in a common die case aluminum housing which showed evidence of "growing action" -- a characteristic common with this type of housing - which resulted in a non-uniformity of the spacing between the rotor and stator plates the longitudinal tie member for the stator plates are secured to hard rubber insulating strips which are not satisfactory for the degree of precision expected for ganged tuning condensers.
