Abstract

General Ulysses S. Grant's struggle to set himself and the Army apart from the political machinations of is day allowed him to protect the peace he had had delivered at Appomattox, and it offers valuable lessons to contemporary leaders. In particular, his response to the Johnson administration's attempts to fire Secretary of War Stanton in violation of the Tenure of Office Act provide the modern day lessons to uniformed officers on the importance of ethical leadership.
