Detection of Magma Reservoir beneath the Changbaishan Volcanic Region through Seismic Ray Tracing

Abstract

The "big mantle wedge" model for the Changbaishan (CBS) volcano predicts a magma reservoir underneath this volcano. To detect and study this magma reservoir, we judiciously select 73 deep earthquakes near the CBS and analyze the seismograms of these events recorded at eight temporal and permanent seismic networks in NE China. We propose to perform extensive ray tracing simulations for these deep earthquakes to determine the location, range, and degree of melt of the magma reservoir. In the first-year technical progress period, we retrieve all required seismograms, pick P- and S-arrivals, and detect P-wave delays and S-wave shadows. We then start ray tracing simulations with 1D models. Our initial results show that a low-velocity anomaly exists in a large area beneath the CBS volcano.
