Architecting the Future of Software Engineering: A National Agenda for Software Engineering Research and Development
Abstract
The purpose of this Readers Guide is to help you find what you need in this report. While the entire report is important for understanding and carrying out the goals of the roadmap, different readers have different needs and priorities, so the sections are written to be read independently. If you need only a comprehensive, high-level overview, we suggest that you begin with the Executive Summary. Next, consider reading the heart of the report: the six Research Focus Areas beginning on page 31, which are critical to engineering future software systems. The References and Bibliography sections provide extensive suggestions if you would like to delve deeper into many of the topics we discuss. As you read this report, we hope you appreciate the vital importance of software engineering, the critical challenges that need to be addressed for the future, and the exciting opportunities that can be realized only if those challenges are met.
