Evaluation of Handoff Outcomes in a Multi-Site Continuum of Care Exercise (Handoffs)

Abstract

Patient handoffs are a critical element in the chain of care for the injured Warfighter. The importance of the handoff process has been validated in civilian research where improved outcomes have been linked to the use of standardized templates. In the military setting, time constraints, patient complexity, complete handoffs, and environmental factors requires a brief, but effective, communication tool. The Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation (SBAR) and Mechanism/Medical Complaint-Injuries/Illness-Signs/Symptoms-Treatments (MIST) techniques meet this requirement but are not always practiced in a non-combat environment.
