Embedded Computer Systems: Software Development Problems Delay the Army's Fire Direction Data Manager

Abstract

At your request, and as part of our overall evaluation of the Department of Defenses development of embedded computers, we are providing this report on the Armys development of the Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) Fire Direction Data Manager (FDDM). FDDM is being developed to provide communications, data processing, and fire direction capabilities for a group of munitions fired from the MLRS launcher. Our objectives in this review were to determine the types and causes of software development problems and examine the programs status and current Army efforts to address the problems. A detailed discussion of our objectives, scope, and methodology is contained in appendix I.
