Report on the Effect of Mass Upon the Mechanical Properties of Cast Steel

Abstract

Medium carbon cast steel and medium manganese cast steel were studied to show the effect of mass upon the mechanical properties. Coupons varying from 1/2 inch to 8 inches in cross section were cast and tensile bars were prepared and tested in both the [?] cast and annealed condition. Density measurements, segregation studies, and photomicrographs were also obtained on the various sections. A comparison was made between results obtained from the coupons and various diameter test bars cast to size. The effect of pouring temperatures on the mechanical properties was also studied, as was the effect produced by high temperature heat treatments.
