Inventory Management: Air Force Items Being Returned for Repair but not Promptly

Abstract

In a May 1986 briefing report, we identified potentially significant inventory management problems at all levels within the Department of Defense (non). These problems involve confirming receipt of items, keeping accurate records, taking inventory, reconciling and researching inventory discrepancies, controlling inventory at retail level, and maintaining physical security. In response to your continuing interest, we have reviewed several of these functions in more detail to confirm the problems, identify their causes, and recommend corrective actions.
