Department of Energy: Observations on Efforts by NNSA and the Office of Environmental Management to Manage and Oversee the Nuclear Security Enterprise

Abstract

The Department of Energy's (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)a separately organized agency within DOEcontinues to face several ongoing challenges in modernizing the nuclear security enterprise, including challenges in managing life extension programs (LEP), contracts and major projects, and the alignment of plans with future budgets. As GAO reported in August 2015, NNSA estimates that it will need more than $290 billion over the next 25 years to support its modernization plans.
