COLON-MD: Colon Cancer Longitudinal Study of the Microbial and Dietary Factors That Influence Response to Treatment
Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) stages II/III are optimally treated with chemotherapy (e.g. FOLFOX) and surgery. However, up to 50 percent of CRC patients experience chemotherapy-induced diarrhea (CID), which can lead dose reduction and be life-threatening. There are no biomarkers for predicting risk or severity of CID. The purpose of this study is to understand the dietary and microbial factors that are associated with incidence and severity of CID and develop a predictive biomarker. I aim to study patient-derived biospecimens and dietary recall to identify microbial and dietary changes that are predictive of incidence and severity of CID to inform future studies of CRC treatment response.
