Russian Lessons Learned in Syria: An Assessment

Abstract

This article will explain some of the military lessons that Russia has gained from its participation in the Syrian conflict. Topics covered: Leader descriptions of how the experience has changed training; How Spetsnaz forces were used; How urban operations once again have taken center stage; How private military companies (PMCs) developed; How the region has served as a testbed for new weapons under a variety of climatic conditions; How new applications of military art developed; How combat experiences have caused tactical changes as well as improvements in the capabilities of logistics, engineering, and topographic forces.
