Navy Virginia (SSN-774) Class Attack Submarine Procurement: Background and Issues for Congress

Abstract

This report provides background information and issues for Congress on the Virginia (SSN-774) class nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) program. The Navy has been procuring Virginia class SSNs since FY1998, and a total of 34 have been procured through FY2021. Since FY2011, Virginia-class boats have been procured at a rate of two per year. The Navys proposed FY2022budget requests the procurement of the 35th and 36th Virginia-class boats.
