Carrier Tracking of Phase Modulated Signals with a Phase-Lock Loop

Abstract

Oscillator discrepancies and Doppler shifts can cause a mismatch between transmitter and receiver carrier frequencies in wireless communications. A phase-lock loop is typically employed to recover the carrier and remove any frequency mismatch. This technical note demonstrates the use of a Costas loop for phase recovery of a quadrature phase-shift keying signal, paying special attention to characterization of the frequency offset. Full simulation source code is provided.
