Model RAV Aircraft Receiving Equipment Manufactured by Aircraft Radio Corp.
Abstract
The object of these tests was to determine the compliance of the equipment with the requirements of the specifications, reference, and to determine its adaptability for use in the Naval Aircraft Service. The equipment was tested for mechanical construction, electrical performance and its adaptability for installation and operation in Navy planes and suitability for use in the Naval Service. The material used appears to be the best known far each specific purpose and the workmanship is excellent. Throughout the tests there was no failure of performance of any part of the equipment. No. 7 dynamotor produced a hum in the output considerably greater than any other of the dynamotors. However, the magnitude was such as not to interfere with the reception of signals considerably less than standard output. Otherwise the performance of this dynamotor was comparable with the seven other units. The total current drain was well within the specified limits. Following is listed those characteristics wherein the equipment fails to meet the requirements of the specifications: overlap, stray fields from heterodyne and CW oscillators, selectivity, audio fidelity, interaction between receivers, power output change due to warm-up, frequency-stability. The equipment does not meet all of the specific dimensions but is within the cubic area. The holes in the antenna and ground binding posts are slightly undersize. With the exception of the stray field from the beat frequency and CW heterodyne oscillators, the points wherein the equipment fails to meet the requirements of the specifications are of a minor nature and will not seriously detract from satisfactory operation in the Naval aircraft service. AB a result of the test the following recommendations are that further effort be made to correct those points wherein the equipment fails to meet the requirements of the specifications, reference, in particular, suppression of stray fields from the beat frequency.
