The Eighth Partial Report on Oxygen Source Compounds Laboratory and Canister Tests on Alkali Oxides
Abstract
Oxygen liberation from the higher oxides of potassium and sodium has been studied in the presence of inorganic compounds as catalysis. Laboratory tests have indicated an enhanced rate of liberation by water vapor with some of the catalysts. Sodium peroxide has been hydrated in the presence of K204 and the resulting material showed somewhat greater activity in the absorption of CO2. Breathing tests on canisters of potassium tetroxide show that oxygen liberation and CO2 absorption take place at rates suitable for breathing purposes. The lowest temperature at which canisters can be used and the life of the canister depend on the size and construction of the apparatus and the amount of activity of the breather.
