Methodology for Off The Shelf (OTS) Hardware Assurance Recommendations

Abstract

NSWC Crane specializes in high assurance hardware and has long-supported DoD and other customers in the deployment of commercial hardware. NSWC Crane has developed, and is sharing, a framework for using OTS hardware while meeting mission assurance objectives. The deliverables for this effort includes the following standalone documents: Off-the-Shelf Hardware Threat Catalog, Off-the-Shelf Hardware Assurance Recommendations, Off-the-Shelf Hardware Assurance Glossary, and this memorandum which details the methodology that was used during the effort. Our hope is that these deliverables can be used as a basis for updating requirements and processes in order to deploy the most secure and resilient systems using inherently risky commercial OTS hardware.
