Medical Regulating in a CBRN Environment

Abstract

Major combat operations in an environment with chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) threats and hazards will present unique challenges to medical operations. These medical challenges of the CBRN environment could complicate the process of moving patients through the military medical system to match them with available and appropriate medical capabilities, known as medical regulating. This Institute for Defense Analyses paper provides a qualitative overview of the adverse impacts on medical regulating in a CBRN environment and discusses the benefits, costs, operational constraints, and planning considerations for potential response options.
