Glutamate Neuroexcitotoxicity in GWI

Abstract

This final technical report describes the key accomplishments and impacts of this grant. The clinical trial was successfully completed, accomplishing the goal of recruiting 40 veterans with GWI from across the country. The low glutamate diet was shown to significantly reduce the overall number of symptoms, to significantly reduce pain and fatigue, and to improve cognitive function after one month on the diet. The double-blind placebo-controlled crossover challenge resulted in differential response, with the majority of subjects experiencing are turn of symptoms and a smaller group having an improvement in symptoms (with both of these groups experiencing improvement on the diet), and a very small group with no response to challenge (and no improvement on the diet). Future research will be needed to confirm the profound improvements from the low glutamate diet in a larger group of veterans, and to understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for the differential effects of the challenge with glutamate versus placebo.
