Factional Networks in Fragmented Conflicts

Abstract

This report describes research exploring the use of network methods to analyze the interactions of militant groups in insurgencies and civil wars. Network and attribute data for militants were collected using manual and automated methods; theories of militant factional behaviors were developed and tested empirically; novel methods of analyzing militant network structure were developed; and new results on the fundamental structure and dynamics of signed networks were obtained.
