Development of an Interactive Systems Thinking Assessment
Abstract
Numerous jobs in the U.S. Army require Soldiers to work with or within systems, yet systems thinking is a talent that is challenging to measure accurately. Given the pervasiveness of systems across Army jobs and requirements, particularly in cyber-related occupations, the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) identified a need for an ecologically valid assessment tool that can identify personnel who have an aptitude for systems thinking. A first-person computer simulation with 3D graphics was developed as a vehicle to measure 13 characteristics related to systems thinking. Multiple assessment methods are employed to assess the various dimensions while the test taker engages in the simulation. The report describes each measure in further detail and provides information regarding the premise and objectives. Next steps for development and validation are discussed.
