The Impact of Mindfulness Meditation Programs on Performance- Related Outcomes Implications for the U.S. Army

Abstract

Meditation is the act of focusing ones attention and awareness on a particular subject or experience (Walshand Shapiro, 2006). Mindfulness meditation is a specific form of meditation practice that involves payingattention, on purpose, to the present moment without judgment (Kabat-Zinn, 2012). Regular mindfulnesspractice is intended to help reduce attachment to thoughts and emotions that cause distress, foster compassion and well-being, and promote individual agency in decisionmaking (Ludwig and Kabat-Zinn, 2008).Numerous mindfulness-based programs have been developed and studied, but most research has focusedon two types of programs: mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.Among those in the U.S. military, there has been growing interest in the potential benefits of mindfulnessmeditation, such as promoting attention and concentration, emotion regulation, impulse control, decisionmaking, morale, productivity, and other outcomes associated with better readiness and resilience of individual service members and units.
