Test Pilot School Awards 1950-1992
Abstract
This document is a historical document for Test Pilot School. This document begins with the UNITED STATES AIR FORCE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD list. The A. B. Honts Award is in Honor of Captain Anderson B. Honts, Jr. Captain Honts, Class 53C, was killed on 8 February 1955 while flight testing a B-57 aircraft at Edwards AFB. This award was presented to the outstanding student in each class until 1966, when it was retired in favor of the Liethen-Tittle Award. The Liethen-Tittle Award is in honor of Major Frank E. Liethen, Jr. and Major David H. Tittle. Major Fank E. Liethen, Jr., Class 61C, was killed on 12 October 1966 in an F-100 aircraft while performing aerial maneuvers as a member of the USAF Thunderbird Aerial Demonstration Team at Nellis AFB. Major Tittle, Class 550, was killed on 5 October 1966 while flight testing the XV5 experimental VSTOL aircraft at Edwards AFB. This award is presented to the pilot in each class who achieves the best overall record for outstanding flying performance and academic excellence. R. L. Jones Award Colonel Jones, while Deputy Commandant of the USAF Test Pilot School, was primarily responsible for the formulation of the Flight Test Engineer program. This program was initiated in 1972. An award honoring Colonel Jones' contributions to the Test Pilot School was jointly established in 1979 by the Air Force Test Pilot School and the Society of Flight Test Engineers. This award replaced the Outstanding Flight Test Engineer Award and is also presented to the flight test engineer or .navigator who achieves the best overall record in report writing, flight test management, and academic excellence. The Prop Wash Award, "ILLEGETIMNI NON CARBORUNDUM" is voted upon by the members of each class and is presented to the student who has contributed most to class spirit and morale during their tenure at the USAF Test Pilot School.
