XB-70 Pilot's Flight Report Flight 1-37

Abstract

Purpose of Flight - 1. Level flight performance at 25, 000 feet; 2. .Afterburner ignition at 2.15, 1.8 1.6 and 1.4 Mz; 55,000 feet; .8 and .4 Mz 15,000 feet; 3. power modulations at 2.15 Mz, 55,000 feet, 1.4 Mz 41,000 feet, and .95 Mz 25,000 feet; 4. Air starts at .9 Mz 25,000 feet; 5. Longitudinal. Accelerated stability at 1.6 and 1.4 Mz 55,000 feet A new takeoff technique was used on this flight (per NASA-FRC) wherein an attempt was made to increase the angle of attack during the takeoff, but leave the nosewheel on the runway and start the rotation earlier. Shortly after brake release, 20 to 30 pounds of aft stick were applied and held to 173 KIAS.
