DOD FOOD INVENTORY: Using Private Sector Practices Can Reduce Costs and Eliminate Problems

Abstract

Concerned about the $60 billion increase in the value of the Department of Defenses (DOD) inventories between 1980 and 1988, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, asked GAO to compare DOD'S logistics practices with those of the private sector. In two previous reports, GAO identified ways that DOD could incorporate private sector business practices to better manage its inventories of aircraft repair parts and medical supplies. In this review, GAO focused on the military food supply system for feeding troops within the continental United States. Specifically, GAO compared DOD'S logistics practices for supplying food with those used by the food service industry to identify any practices DOD could adopt to reduce its logistics costs.
