XB-70A Test Report Flight 2-5 and 2-6

Abstract

Flight 2-5 was conducted on 17 Sep 1965. Mr. Al White, North American Aviation, Inc (NAA), was the pilot and Lt Colonel Fitzhugh Fulton, Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) was the copilot for this flight. The pilots launched the air vehicle from Edwards AFB runway 04 at 1158 PDT and landed on runway 04 at 1353 PDT, for a total flight time of one hour and fifty-five minutes. The maximum speed and altitude during this flight were Mach 1. 83 and 50,500 feet respectively. Take-off weight was 488,000 pounds. On the first attempt Flight 2-6 was aborted during takeoff roll on 21 Sep 1965 due to rpm roll back and high exhaust gas temperature (EGT) on No. 2 engine. After slow down, when the air vehicle was on the taxi strip, the rear inboard left main landing gear tire blew causing, in-turn, damage to a landing gear electrical junction box and resulting in a false unsafe gear indication.
