High-Containment Laboratories: Comprehensive and Up-to-Date Policies and Stronger Oversight Needed

Abstract

Federal departments' management of hazardous biological agents in their laboratories is primarily guided by the principles and practices of biosafety and biosecurity, as well as federal regulations governing biological select agents and toxins. The principles and practices of biosafety and biosecurity are outlined in the widely-accepted leading guidance for laboratories, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), published in partnership by CDC and National Institutes of Health (NIH).
