Defense Health Care: Problems With Medical Care Overseas Are Being Addressed

Abstract

The reduced military health care system has resulted in DODs placing a greater reliance on the German and Italian medical systems for providing treatment to beneficiaries. Beneficiaries, however, must contend with language barriers, cultural differences, unfamiliar doctors, quality of care concerns including differences in treatment, and a general lack of information about how to obtain host nation care. Additionally, active dutyfamily members using host nation providers were, until October 1, 1994, required to pay deductibles and copayments for their care.
