Chile: An Overview

Abstract

Chile, a country of 19.1 million people, is located along the Pacific coast of South America. Chile traditionally has been none of the United States closest partners in Latin America due to the countries common commitments to democracy, human rights, and free trade. Chiles transition to a higher level of economic development has enabled the country to play a more active role in foreign affairs, including U.S.- backed efforts to promote peace and stability in the Western Hemisphere.
