Practical UXO Classification: Enhanced Data Processing Strategies for Technology Transition

Abstract

This project demonstrated advanced methods for the detection and classification of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in production settings. Advanced Geophysical Classification (AGC) software and hardware were developed and tested under the following project tasks: 1. Software development: software tools were developed to facilitate the application of AGC methods and transfer this technology to industry. An application for in-field verification of measurements quality objectives has been developed and transitioned to industry. 2. AHRS testing: the performance of commercial Attitude and Heading Reference Systems (AHRS) was tested to verify they can meet requirements for AGC. 3. AGC in challenging scenarios: we tested processing algorithms for classification of small targets of interest (TOI). 4. UltraTEM testing: data collected with the UltraTEM AGC sensor at test sites was processed to verify capabilities for informed source selection and classification. 5. Technology transfer: advancements in AGC processing workflows and lessons learned from this project were shared with the MMRP industry Software tools and processing algorithms tested under this project have been transitioned to industry and have been successfully used on commercial MMRP projects. The UltraTEM Classifier system tested under this project has been validated under DAGCAP and is expected to reduce project costs via one-pass classification capabilities.
