Operation United Shield and Expeditionary Force 21

Abstract

This paper takes the historical case study of Operations United Shield, Unitas and JOINT GUARDIAN and uses them to both highlight and validate concepts brought forth in the 2014 Marine Corps Capstone Document, Expeditionary Force 21. In light of the Marine Corps' Expeditionary Force 21 (EF21) concept for future employment, these operations offer lessons for future contingencies by identifying previous successes under similar operational constraints.
