Is the Marine Corps transition to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter the correct course of action for the future of Marine Aviation?

Abstract

With existing Department of Defense (DOD) budget constraints, development and implementation of a new weapons system is an arduous task. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is the most expensive program the DOD has pursued to date. While some parts of the transition to this aircraft are a new endeavor, other parts of the transition are not.. This paper will explore the Marine Corps historical transition to the AV-8 Harrier aircraft and use these data points to compare to the current transition of the F-35Joint Strike Fighter. This paper will also compare and contrast existing data available between the AV-8B Harrier and F-35Joint Strike Fighter in terms of level of effort for maintenance and continued support.
