Mexican Marines: Paradigm Shift in Targeting Drug Cartels in Mexico

Abstract

Since 2006 Mexican Armed Forces have been supporting Mexican law enforcement agencies to fight drug cartels and Drug Trafficking Organizations. Mexican Marine Corps have been in a protagonist role despite the fact they are the smallest of all armed branches of the MAF. Mexican Marines have taken the lead against drug cartels since then and have achieved the capture or killing of some of the most wanted drug kingpins in Mexico, including Joaquin Archibaldo Guzman-Loera, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel; Miguel Angel Trevio-Morales, leader of the Zetas Cartel; Antonio Ezequiel Crdenas-Guilln, leader of the Gulf Cartel; and Marcos Arturo Beltran-Leyva, leader of the Beltran-Leyva Cartel.
