Significance of Gwadar Port for Pakistan

Abstract

Gwadar port is likely to emerge as a regional hub of economic activities and a year round vital link to China, Afghanistan, and CARs. It can turn the economic fate of Pakistan. However, the Chinese involvement in the construction and operation of Gwadar port has made it a conflicting issue for the regional and extra regional stake holders. In order to develop Gwadar Port in the expected time frame and acquire maximum benefit from it, Pakistan needs to diffuse the speculations about its military use by any country. Islamabad should adopt a balanced policy towards enhancing regional and extra regional cooperation, which will ensure security and stability rather than confrontation and power struggle among the stake holders.
