Balancing the Force: Why the Marine Corps Should Become Masters of the Gray Zone

Abstract

The "gray zone" is the latest phrase describing conflicts that occur between peace and traditional interstate conflict. Gray zone challenges will make up the preponderance of future conflicts and military engagement. The United States military currently lacks the trained and equipped forces necessary to address gray zone challenges because it is an unbalanced conventionally focused force. The answer is a gray zone focused Marine Corps which will balance the capabilities of the overall force and improve America's capability to address future threats.
