The Emergence of Climate Change as a U.S. National Security Objective, and How Secretary Kerry's Personal Diplomacy and Leadership Impacts the Global Climate Agreement in Paris, France, 2015

Abstract

President Obama has elevated climate change to a national security priority, initiated a series of executive orders to green the U.S. government, and set the stage for Secretary of State John Kerry to work out a climate change accord in Paris, France, 2015. The 68th Secretary of State used personal diplomacy and leadership to educate the public about the danger of climate change to national security as well as rallied, prepared, and led the employees of the Department of State to negotiate the most aggressive accord possible to combat climate change in Paris. Secretary Kerrys personal diplomacy and leadership is an excellent case study in using diplomacy to advance Americans national interest.
