Future U.S. Military areas of operations in the Philippines

Abstract

The U.S. has not had any military bases in the Philippines Since 1991. The attacks on America on September 11. 2001. and the ensuing Global War on Terrorism re-introduced U.S. troops in the Philippines to fight the extremists in Mindanao. The Philippine Constitution of 1987 prohibits foreign military bases. troops, and any other facilities in the country except under a treaty approved by the government of the Philippines and the other contracting stale. The recently approved Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement between the US and the Philippines allows for the temporary and rotational deployment of US forces in the Philippines. However. there are no approved locations for where the US troops will be operating from.
