ASEAN's Path to Regional Autonomy: Lessons Learned from the European Union

Abstract

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU)have very distinct histories. However, today both the EU and ASEAN intend to create prosperity and stability through economic cooperation and the possibility of collective security. Some argue that the EU has achieved a greater level of regional power as a result of the functioning of its structure, regulatory and rules-based charter, and internal accountability.
