U.S. Stability by Investing in the United States Office of the President: SIX YEARS AT A TIME

Abstract

The presidency has moved from a party-based to a candidate-centered and focused process that breeds a fundamental mismanagement. Over time, the office has gravitated from governance to campaigning that challenges an individual's ability to make and process ethical decisions as well as promotes additional workload on the staff that detracts from the primary duties, roles, and responsibilities of the office. When there is an incumbent president in office seeking reelection, the "business of government must share the stage with the business of campaigning." This relationship is a detriment to the Executive Branch, as well as the presidency, and has the potential for lasting implications: economically, diplomatically, and informationally. Changing the tenure of office to a single six-year term will, among other things, provide consistency with key instruments of national power.
