Consolidated Afloat Network and Enterprise Services (CANES): A Cost Effective System Enhancing Power Projection at Sea
Abstract
Consolidated Afloat Network and Enterprise Services (CANES) is replacing five existing legacy Network Systems on US Naval vessels and 135 legacy systems in the fleet. CANES is a $2.5 billion contract awarded to Northrop Grumman in 2010. The contract is an Acquisition Category (ACAT) 1 contract to be implemented on 180 Navy ships by 2024. CANES is a virtual network that has already been installed on thirty Navy ships and uses commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software that will be upgraded in cycles making it less expensive than the legacy systems it has replaced. CANES enhances power projection at sea for Naval and Joint force by enhancing C41 capabilities and network security; it reduces cyber vulnerabilities to tactical systems. CANES also provides the warfighter with the technological advantage to engage and defend against the enemy at sea, on land, and in the air. The Navy spends over $1.3 billion annually to maintain obsolete legacy systems. CANES has saved $720 million to date and is projected to save hundreds of millions of dollars more during its life cycle. CANES is a reliable computer network system that has gone through a rigorous acquisition process. CANES is cost effective and enhances warfighting capabilities projecting Naval and Joint power at sea.
