Organizational Culture and the United States Marine Corps: Removing Obstacles to Gender Integration through Culture Change

Abstract

In January of 2016 the Secretary of Defense rescinded all gender-based combat restrictions. How the Marine Corps proceeds with this policy will either foster dissent and damage cohesion or capitalize on the expanded capabilities of all eligible service members. Current Marine Corps culture, however, does not promote a climate conducive to gender integration. This paper analyzes existing Marine Corps organizational culture, identifies obstacles to gender integration, and provides recommended changes. Conducting organizational culture change is not easy, but it is mandatory to ensure that the United States Marine Corps remains an effective fighting force.
