Diversity and Talent Management in the Marine Corps: How the Two Can Improve Operational Readiness

Abstract

Recent studies and research illustrate that diversity can improve the intellectual depth of an organization while also symbolizing inclusion and representativeness of society. Of the US military services, the Marine Corps possesses the least amount of diversity across social demographics. This document demonstrates the reason for the Marine Corps' low amount of diversity is due partially to its culture and mission, but more so because it is not tied directly into operational readiness. The purpose of this document is to research the feasibility of implementing a talent management program focused on social demographics that is incorporated into the Defense Readiness Reporting System. Initiating such a talent management program will provide better purpose to diversity and act as an incremental step to improve it within the Marine Corps.
