Keeping Taiwan Free: The Strategic Importance of Taiwan, the Effects of its Economic Interdependence with China, and the Necessity of Increasingits Economic Diversification

Abstract

The paper highlights the importance of Taiwan in China's view of the balance of power in Asia and the use of China's economic leverage to influence Taiwan's politics. Given Taiwan's regional importance and shared democratic values, it is the strategic interest of the United States to help Taiwan diversify its economy, thereby reducing China's leverage over Taiwan, giving the people of Taiwan a better opportunity in the long run to freely determine their own future in resolving the cross-Strait dispute.
